In 2013, the unemployment rate in Lithuania stood at 11.8%

Statistics Lithuania informs that, according to the Labour Force Survey data, the unemployment rate in the country in 2013 stood at 11.8%, which is by 1.6 percentage points less than in 2012. In 2013, the male unemployment rate stood at 13.1, the female one – at 10.5%.

Over a year, the male unemployment rate decreased by 2.1, female – by 1.1 percentage points.

 

In 2013, the long-term unemployment rate stood at 5.1% and was by 1.5 percentage points lower than in 2012.

 

In 2013, there were 172.5 thousand unemployed persons in the country, which is by 24.3 thousand (12.4%) less than in 2012. 95.6 thousand men and 76.9 thousand women were unemployed.

 

The number of the long-term unemployed was 74.1 thousand (42.9% of the total number of unemployed), which is by 22.7 thousand (23.5%) less than in 2012.

Over a year, the number of employed persons grew by 1.3%.

 

In 2013, there were 1 million 293 thousand employed persons in the country. Compared to 2012, this number grew by 17 thousand (1.3%). Over a year, the largest growth in the number of employed persons was observed in construction (9.7 thousand) and public administration and defence, compulsory social security (6.6 thousand), while the largest drop – in education (8.7 thousand) and information and communication enterprises (3.6 thousand).

 

In 2013, there were 636.1 thousand men and 656.7 thousand women working in the whole economy. Over a year, the number of employed men increased by 18.5 thousand (3%), while the number of employed women decreased by 1.5 thousand (0.2%).

 

In 2013, the employment rate of persons aged 15–64 stood at 63.7%; over a year, it increased by 1.7 percentage points. In 2013, the male employment rate (of persons aged 15–64) stood at 64.7, the female one – at 62.8%; over a year, it grew by 2.5 and 1 percentage points respectively.


Economic activity of the youth (aged 15–24), %

Over a year, the employment rate of persons aged 55–64 grew by 1.7 percentage points and stood at 53.4%.

 

In 2013, there were 1 million 61 thousand economically inactive persons aged 15 and older in the country, which is by 17.1 thousand (1.6%) less than in 2012.

 

In 2013, compared to 2012, the number of unemployed persons aged 15–24 decreased by 14.7%.

 

In 2013, against 2012, the youth (persons aged 15–24) unemployment rate decreased by 4.8 percentage points and stood at 21.9%.

 

In 2013, there were 27.4 thousand unemployed persons aged 15–24; against 2012, their number decreased by 4.7 thousand (14.7%). In 2013, every fourteenth person aged 15–24 was unemployed (in 2012, every thirteenth).

 

In 2013, there were 97.9 thousand employed persons aged 15–24 in the whole economy, i.e. every fourth resident of the said age (in 2012, every fifth). Against 2012, this number grew by 9.5 thousand (10.8%).

In 2013, the youth (persons aged 15–24) employment rate stood at 24.6%; over a year, it grew by 3.1 percentage points.

 

In 2013, 272.4 thousand (68.5%) persons aged 15–24 were economically inactive; out of them, 92% were studying at school of higher, vocational or general school.

 

In IV quarter 2013, the unemployment rate in the country stood at 11.4%.

 

In IV quarter 2013, the unemployment rate in the country stood at 11.4%, which is by 0.5 percentage points more than in III quarter 2013. The male unemployment rate stood at 12.4%, the female one – at 10.4%.

 

In IV quarter 2013, against III quarter 2013, the youth (persons aged 15–24) unemployment rate dropped by 2.4 percentage points and stood at 20.7%.

 

In IV quarter 2013, there were 167.2 thousand unemployed persons in the country, i.e. by 7.5 thousand more than in III quarter 2013. In IV quarter 2013, the number of the long-term unemployed increased by 1.2 thousand and amounted to 69.2 thousand. In IV quarter 2013, there were 25.6 thousand unemployed persons aged 15–24, i.e. by 5.2 thousand less than in III quarter 2013.

 

In IV quarter 2013, there were 1 million 299 thousand employed persons in the country; against III quarter 2013, their number dropped by 9.6 thousand.

 

In IV quarter 2013, the employment rate of persons aged 15–64 stood at 64.3%; over a quarter, it decreased by 0.2 percentage points. The male employment rate stood at 65.8, the female one – at 62.9%.

 

In IV quarter 2013, the youth (persons aged 15–24) employment rate stood at 24.9%; over a quarter, it decreased by 1 percentage point. Over a quarter, the employment rate of persons aged 55–64 increased by 0.7 percentage points and stood at 54.6%.

Concepts

Unemployed – a non-working person of an established age (15–74 years) who has been actively seeking for a job (during the last four weeks) and is ready to start working in a certain period (two weeks).

 

Labour force – the total employed persons and the unemployed.

 

Long-term unemployed person – an unemployed person who has been seeking for a job for one year or longer.

 

Long-term unemployment rate – an indicator expressed as a ratio of the long-term unemployed to the labour force.

 

Inactive population – persons who are neither working nor seeking for a job and who can be categorised as neither employed nor unemployed.

 

Unemployment rate – an indicator expressed as a ratio of the unemployed to the labour force.

 

Employed persons – persons aged 15 and older doing any kind of work for which they are remunerated in cash or in kind or have income or profit.

 

Employment rate – an indicator expressed as a ratio of the employed persons of a selected age group to the total population of the same age.

 

The statistical information has been prepared based on the Labour Force Survey data. The survey is carried out in all EU Member States, using the same concepts and classifications, following the recommendations of the International Labour Organization, which makes its results comparable across the countries.

 

The survey has been carried using a sampling method. In IV quarter 2013, 13.5 thousand residents (0.5%) aged 15 and older were interviewed; the results were recalculated for the total population.
