Advisor: Latvia's eurozone membership as additional argument for Lithuania

BC, Vilnius, 07.01.2014.Print version
Nerijus Udrenas, Chief Advisor on economy and social policy to Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, says that Lithuania must further follow the example set by neighbouring countries Latvia and Estonia and to adopt the euro in 2015, informs LETA/ELTA.

According to Udrenas, the fact that Latvia has adopted the euro, will not make a significant impact on Lithuanian economy, however it should prompt Lithuanians to do it faster.

"We could talk about an additional argument for Lithuania to adopt the euro rather than an impact on economy. Eurozone is our largest trade partner: in 2012 it accounted for 30% of Lithuania's export and 31% of its import. Latvia is one of the main trade partners, because of this country alone export to the eurozone increases to 41% and import to 37%," said Udrenas in an interview with Ziniu Radijas on Tuesday.

Lithuania has much to present to Europe, says Nerijus Udrenas.

According to Udrenas, in the nearest future the president will leave for Strasbourg to present the results of the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council.

"It was a very intense half a year of the Presidency, involving many important meetings and works," said the presidential advisor in an interview to radio Ziniu Radijas on Tuesday.

According to him the key achievement of the Presidency of the EU Council was the agreement on the 2014-2020 EU budget reached between EU member states and the European Parliament. Another achievement of Lithuania, in the opinion of Udrenas, was the agreement on the banks' reform and supervision mechanisms. Udrenas did not forget to mention the most significant meeting of the Presidency – Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius.

"New stage of Eastern Partnership relations has begun," said Udrenas.
