Gender-based wage gap increased by 1.8% in Estonia in 2012
The gross hourly wage of female salaried employees was, without irregular bonuses and extras, 4.28 euros and for male employees it was 5.68 euros, Statistics Estonia wrote in its blog.
The gender-based wage gap was the biggest in Estonia in 1994, when the gross hourly wage of women was by 28.9% lower than that of men. During the "wages rally" in 2007, the gap grew to 27.6% again.
In 2012, the gender-based wage gap was the biggest in finance and insurance spheres, 43.3%, a growth of 5.8%age points in a year. The number of male employees in this sphere didn’t increase but their hourly wage grew by 5%. The number of female employees grew by around 600 and their hourly wage fell by 4.8%. Men amounted to 28% of employees in this sphere.
The gender-based wage gap was the lowest in the transport and warehousing sphere, 2.4%, a fall of 3.2%age points in a year. The number of both male and female employees grew but the hourly wage of women grew by 0.5% while that of men fell by 2.8%. Men amount to 72% of the salaried employees in the transport and warehousing sector.
The number of male employees grew by 8% and that of female by 4.1% in a year. The share of male salaried employees grew to 48% in October 2012 after a long time.
