In a video conference today, Latvia Finance Minister Andris Vilks (Unity) said that Latvia's economy has returned to 2007 levels this year, and will exceed pre-crisis levels in 2013, reports LETA/Nozare.lv.

The minister said that 2012 was a very good one for Latvia, and that nobody expected that the economic growth figures would be as positive as they are now. ''A year ago, it was hard to predict the growth of Latvia's national economy in 2012,'' Vilks said.

Vilks pointed out that Latvia registered the highest increase in employment in the EU this year, and has one of the lowest inflation figures. He added that there was also a very positive increase in export volumes.

According to the minister, the positive growth figures will not be a one-year exception, but growth will also continue in 2014 and 2015, as a good foundation has been laid.

The minister also said that it is symbolically important that Latvia has completely repaid the entire loan borrowed from the International Monetary Fund. Vilks also pointed out that the improvement of Latvia's credit rating and reputation has also been very important.

Vilks said that Latvia is one of the countries that has surprised the most in 2012.
