Savisaar: Estonia needs to prepare for a lengthy crisis

Juhan Tere, BC, Tallinn, 29.10.2008.Print version
Chairman of the Centre Party and Mayor of Tallinn Edgar Savisaar stated that Estonia has to prepare itself for a lengthy economic crisis, writes the National Broadcasting.

Edgar Savisaar.

“In every two to three months I have read from the newspapers that another growth wave will start very soon. This cannot be taken seriously. We need to prepare for a lengthy crisis and we have not yet reached the end of it,” said the opposition leader.

The politician who recently presented his book “Economic Policy” stated that he thinks that while thus far the negative consequences have come from the decisions made in Estonia, the situation with the global economy will start having an increasing impact on the country.

Savisaar remarked that he has been left with an impression that no one is currently taking responsibility for the State’s finances and the economic problems in Estonia.

“We need our own economic policy as the Reform Party members imagine that the market regulates everything and there is no need for any economic policy,” he explained, adding that the State’s regulating role needs to be increased.

When asked, what would Savisaar do in the current situation, he noted, “I would start with the matter of exports and would continue with social affairs because currently the solving of social problems has remained in the background – in this budget the Ministry of Social Affairs led by Maret Maripuu suffers the most.”
