Estonia registers EU's largest increase in retail trade turnover in May; Latvia second

In May 2012, retail trade turnover in Latvia increased by 7.4% from May 2011, the second largest increase in the European Union, according to the latest data from the EU's statistical office Eurostat. Estonia recorded the steepest increase in retail trade turnover in May – 10.4%, followed by Latvia, Romania – 5.9%, and Lithuania – 5.2%.

The largest decreases were posted by Malta – 7.3%, Portugal – 5.1%, and Spain – 4.8%. Among all EU countries for which data are available, retail trade turnover increased in 12 countries and reduced in nine, writes LETA.

 

Compared to May 2011, retail trade turnover reduced 0.3% in the EU and by 1.7% in the eurozone.

 

In comparison with April 2012, retail trade turnover increased 0.6% in the EU and 0.6% in the eurozone.

 

The largest month-on-month decreases were recorded in Poland – 1.3%, Slovenia – one%, Bulgaria – 0.3%, and Germany – 0.3%.

 

The largest month-on-month increases were registered in Austria – 3.1%, Portugal – 2.9%, and Latvia – 2.1%.

 

Meanwhile, retail trade turnover in Lithuania increased 1.1%, and in Estonia – by 1%.
