Estonians consume 71 kilograms of meat per person per year, half of which is pork, writes LETA/National Broadcasting. With this indicator, Estonia is by 20% behind an average European.

“An average resident of Europe consumes 6.7 kilograms of pork per year more than an average Estonian whereas pork has been a foundation of Estonians’ eating habits for centuries,” noted the director of the Food Association Sirje Potisepp.

According to Eurostat, Spaniards eat an average of 60.7 kilos of pork per residents per year, Danes 56.9 kilograms, Germans 55.7 kilos and Lithuanians 41.8 kilograms of pork.

“There are a lot of myths surrounding pork’s high fat levels and they clearly need to be talked about and explained,” added Potisepp. She stated that in order to do that, the Food Association launched an awareness-raising campaign on pork on Thursday.

The focus of the campaign will be to explain to people about the fat contents and nutritional values of different pieces of pigs’ carcasses. The fat level of different pieces of pork range from 5% to 35%, rather comparable to fat contents of chicken meat. The campaign will aim to demonstrate that no one will have to give up eating pork and that people can find the right type of pork to eat in accordance to their eating habits and needs.
