Lithuania's registered unemployment rate stood at 13.7% on September 1, the country's Employment Service said on Friday, writes LETA/BNS.

Although labor demand is recovering after shrinking until April, the number of registered unemployed people is much higher than last year, the Employment Service notes. Its head Inga Balnanosiene, part of people were encouraged to register as unemployed by the so-call job-seeker's allowance.

"We see an increase in the number of people who were previously not active in the labor market and were not in employment at all or worked no more than for two years," Balnanosiene said.

Employers registered 40,200 vacancies in August, which is the highest number this year. Labor demand rose 14.7% in August, from July, and grew 20.9% from August, 2019.

But the average monthly number of registered unemployed people stands at 27,700 this year, compared to last year's eight-month average of 21,500.
