Lithuania's unemployment hits new high of 13.5%
BC, Vilnius, 25.08.2020.Print version
Lithuania's steadily rising unemployment hit a new high of 13.5% this week, the country's Employment Service said on Tuesday, noting that the rate is the highest among neighboring states, writes LETA/BNS.
The number of registered job-seekers in Lithuania currently stands at 232,400, it said.
Inga Balnanosiene, the service's director, said the surge in unemployment was due to young people and previously self-employed individuals joining the jobless ranks, and to layoffs.
The jobless rate is up from 12.8% on August 1 and 9.3% before the coronavirus crisis.
Lithuania's unemployment rate compares with 6.1% in Poland (up by one percentage points from a year ago), 8.4% in Latvia (up from 6.2% in January) and 7.8% in Estonia (up from 5.1% in January), according to the Employment Service.
