Eurostat: Estonia is the fourth in EU in terms of unemployment numbers

Postimees Online: while in January the unemployment rate in Ireland and Slovakia was slightly the higher than in Estonia, Estonia has passed these countries by now, writes LETA.

According to the March data, Estonia ranks fourth among the EU Member States in terms of unemployment rate.

According to the Eurostat, the highest unemployment rate in EU is in Spain (16.1%), which is followed by Latvia (15.5), Lithuania (11.6%) and by Estonia (9.1%).

"The unemployment rate in Estonia has grown slightly faster than in the other countries," said the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Social Affairs Egle Käärats. She explained, however, that it needs to be noted that this might be affected by the size of the country – smaller economies react faster to changes – as well as by the traditions on the labor market. "In our case, it has been clearly the overwhelming norm to work with full time and this also affects the employment rate," said Käärats.

Käärats stated that in the Netherlands, which has the lowest employment rate, working part-time is very much used.
