More than a half of employees work overtime in Latvia, and 55% of them do not get paid for overtime work, according to a poll carried out by CV Market job portal, cites LETA.

When asked whether they did any overtime work, 30% gave an affirmative answer, noting they did not get paid for overtime, 26% said they never worked overtime, 25% said they worked overtime and were paid for overtime work while 19% said they rarely chose to work overtime.

Of those, who said they worked overtime, 55% do not get paid for overtime work but 45% said they were paid extra for working overtime.

Quite often job descriptions provide for working time outside the generally accepted working hours, making employees to think that overtime work is part of their regular duties and therefore they are not entitled to any overtime pay but it is not true, says CV Market representative Kristaps Kolosovs.

The poll showed that mostly men work overtime. Respondents of both sexes aged under 35 years more frequently said they were paid for overtime work while employees older than 35 years were more likely to claim they did not get overtime pay.

The poll was carried out from November 17 to December 7 this year, and 704 respondents aged 20-55 years participated in the poll.
