Number of jobless Estonians increased by 10% at end-September

The number of registered unemployed in Estonia stood at 28,863 at the end of September 2017 and made up 4.5 of the total number of workforce from age 16 to retirement age, a ratio 0.4%age points higher than in the same month last year, informs LETA/BNS.

While the number of registered unemployed decreased compared with August, the number of registered unemployed with reduced work capacity increased slightly month over month. As at the end of the month, such people registered as unemployed numbered 8,824, making up 31% of the total number of employed, the Unemployment Insurance Fund said.


The rate of registered unemployment remained the highest in East-Viru County at 9.2% and in Valga County at 8.4%. Unemployment was lowest in Harju County at 3.3% and in Saare County at 3.5%. Unskilled workers made up the biggest part of the registered jobless who had previously worked, accounting for 23% of the total, ahead of service and sales personnel at 18% and skilled workers and craftsmen at 16%.


During the month 4,578 new offers were added to the job offers available via the Unemployment Insurance Fund, 12% fewer than in August and 9% fewer than in September 2016. The Unemployment Insurance Fund had a total of 10,022 jobs on offer during the month. The biggest part of jobs on offer were for service and sales personnel with 23%, unskilled workers with 22% and skilled workers and craftsmen with 21% of all jobs on offer.


During the month 3,394 people, including 685 persons with limited capacity for work, found employment or started business with the help of the Unemployment Insurance Fund.


Recipients of the unemployment insurance benefit numbered 9,508 in September, making up 33% of the registered jobless. The average benefit per calendar month was 443 euros and the sum total disbursed surpassed 3.7 million euros. The basic unemployment allowance of 151 euros a month was paid to 6,651 persons, 23% of the total number of registered jobless.


The redundancy benefit was paid to 468 people last month and the average size of the benefit awarded was 1,595 euros. The sum total paid out in redundancy benefits was more than 749,000 euros.


The benefit in case of insolvency of the employer was awarded to 86 persons. The average size of the benefit was 2,573 euros and overall more than 276,000 euros was disbursed under that item.
