Single elderly people poorest in Latvia

Single elderly people are the poorest in Latvia, writes LETA, according to the Latvian Central Statistical Bureau.

The statistics show that in case of people aged 65 years and more monthly income per household member is EUR 324 as opposed to the country average of EUR 417.

 

Food is the main expenditure item for the elderly. Last year they spent nearly one-third or 32% of their total expenditure on food.

 

Housing-related costs is the second largest expenditure item for the elderly, as they reached one-fifth of total monthly expenditure or EUR 69 per household member in 2016. Heating, electricity, water and gas supply bills made up the lions' share (88%) of the housing-related costs.

 

Health care costs is the third largest expenditure item for the households comprising only the elderly. In 2016 health care costs of such households were EUR 55 per household member monthly or 16.7% of total consumption expenditure.
