Latvia is currently substantially behind other European and even neighboring countries in introducing wind energy, LETA was told by Wind Energy Association board member Toms Naburgs.

According to the World Wind Energy Association's latest report about 2016, Latvia was ranked 62nd in the world in wind energy capacity at 68 megawatts (MW), compared to 59th in the world in the previous year.

Guatemala, Switzerland and Jamaica have surpassed Latvia over the year in the production of wind energy.

Naburgs said that Estonia's wind production capacity last year was at 310 MW, but Lithuania's - 493 MW.

The country with the largest wind capacity in 2016 was China - 168,730 MW, followed by the United States - 82,033 MW, and Germany - 50,019 MW.
