For the third year in a row, Venezuela is in first place in news agency Bloomberg's Misery Index, which combines countries' 2017 inflation and unemployment outlooks, while Latvia has moved up from 27th to 18th place among 65 economies included in the index, writes LETA.

Latvia's index is 11 this year, up from 8.5 in 2016.

Venezuela's index for this year is 499.7. South Africa is in second place with an index of 32.2, while Argentina is third with an index of 30.9.

Of other European Union countries, Greece is in 4 place in the Misery Index, Spain is 6, Croatia 12, Italy 13, Cyprus 15 and Portugal 16.

Latvia and eurozone share 18th place, they are followed by France in 19 place, while Russia is in 21st place.

Estonia has climbed from 35th to 25th place in the Misery Index, while Lithuania has gone down from 24th to 29th place.

Closing the Misery Index is Japan and Switzerland, which share 62nd place with an index of 3.6 each. Singapore is in 64th place with an index of 3.1, and Thailand is in 65th place with an index of 2.6.

Poland experienced the biggest negative move in the rankings, rising from 45th to 28th place.

"Though it's seen a steady decline in its unemployment rate since the financial crisis, inflation rose to 1.8% in January after Poland's longest period of deflation on record. Similar price increases in Romania, Estonia, Latvia and Slovakia drove large jumps in the countries' Misery Index rankings," said Bloomberg.
