Latvia records EU's biggest drop in construction output in Q3

Production in Latvia's construction sector in the third quarter of 2016 decreased 22 % as compared to July-September 2015, which was the biggest drop across the European Union member states, according to Eurostat's revised data.

Poland's production in construction decreased 17.6%, Slovakia recorded a 16.8% decrease, Hungary - 13.1%, Slovenia - 12.7%, Lithuania -11.3%, Bulgaria -10.7%, Czech Republic - 8.4%, Portugal - 3.4%, Romania - 2.3%. Construction output in the other eighteen EU member countries was higher than in the third quarter of 2015.


The biggest increases were registered in Greece (77.3%), Ireland (22%), Cyprus (12.1%), Netherlands (10.6%) and Sweden (10.4%). Construction output in Estonia in the third quarter last year was 0.5% higher than in the third quarter of 2015.


Construction output in the EU increased 2% year on year, while the eurozone recorded 3% increase. Quarter on quarter, construction output in the EU rose 0.7% and in the euro area 1.3%.


Compared to the second quarter of 2016, construction output decreased in eleven EU countries in the third quarter. Slovakia recorded the steepest reduction (7.5%), followed by Poland (6%), Romania (4.5%) and Latvia (3.9%). Production in Lithuanian construction sector decreased 1.6%, while Estonia registered 1.5% reduction. The biggest increases were reported by Greece (11.6%) and Hungary (6.4%).
