Eurostat: Latvian exports fall at fourth steepest rate among EU member states in January

During the first eight months of this year, Latvian exports fell at the fourth fastest rate among EU member states against January-August 2015, according to the latest Eurostat data, writes LETA.

Compared to the first eight months of last year, Latvian exports contracted by 3% this year, just like in Belgium and Lithuania. Steeper reductions were recorded in Cyprus and Great Britain (-12% in both countries), Greece (-6%) and Finland (-5%).


By contrast, Estonia increased exports by 1% y-o-y.


Altogether 13 EU member states saw their exports contract in January-August 201 against the same period a year ago. Exports remained unchanged in Italy, Luxembourg and Austria, and grew in the remaining 12 countries.


Malta reported the strongest growth as its exports jumped 22% y-o-y, and the Czech Republic increased exports by 5%.


During the eight months of 2016, imports declined in 13 EU member states, remained unchanged in Germany, Greece, France and Austria and rose in 11 countries.


The biggest import reduction in the above period was recorded in Luxembourg (-7%), Belgium and Latvia (-6% in both countries) and Lithuania (-5%).


The steepest annual import growth was registered in Cyprus (+16%), Malta and Romania (+7% in both countries), as well as Estonia, Croatia and Slovakia (+3% in all three countries).
