Number of young unemployed people in Latvia drops 8.9% in H1

The number of young unemployed people, aged 15-29, in the first half of this year dropped by 8.9% from the respective period last year, according to the Latvian State Employment Agency’s data writes LETA.

On June 30, there were 14,563 youngsters without jobs in Latvia compared to 15,864 youngsters in the respective period last year.


The biggest group of young unemployed people was the age group of 25-29 years - 8,824 youngsters compared to 9,025 last year.


Of the total number of young unemployed people, 8,573 were women, and 5,990 were men.


One fifth or 20% of them had higher education, 25% had professional education, 27% had general secondary education, 23% had basic education, and for 5% the education level was lower.


Almost half or 46% of the young unemployed people have been out of job for up to four months, 15% for 4-6 months, 26% for half a year to a year, 11% for 1-3 years, and 2% for 3 years and more.


The Employment Agency’s Youth Guarantee project expert Lelde Kikute said that the project’s total financing is EUR 33,977,162. The project’s goal is to achieve that 19,000 young people integrate into the labor market. The project is being implemented from January 2, 2014, until June 30, 2018.
