Prices for consumer goods and services decreased by 0.5% in Lithuania in August

Statistics Lithuania informs that in August 2016, compared to July, prices for consumer goods and services decreased by 0.5%. The overall price change was mainly influenced by a decrease in prices for vegetables, spirits, fuels, footwear, as well as by an increase in prices for tobacco products, bread and cereals, package holidays.

Over the said period, prices for consumer goods and services decreased by 0.6 and 0.1% respectively. The influence of the changes in prices for consumer goods on the overall monthly price change stood at minus 0.46 pp, while the influence of the change in prices for consumer services stood at minus 0.01 pp.


Prices for consumer goods and services regulated by State and municipal authorities decreased by 0.5 %; the same decrease was recorded for market prices. The influence of the changes in prices regulated by State and municipal authorities stood at minus 0.06 pp, while the influence of the changes in market prices stood at minus 0.41 pp.

In August 2016, against July, among food products and non-alcoholic beverages, the largest decrease in prices was observed for vegetables – 10.1, fruit – 0.9 . Among fruit and vegetables, a significant decrease in prices was observed for potatoes – 31.1, grapes – 16.4, root vegetables (carrots, beetroots) – 13, cabbages – 7.7, bulb vegetables – 7.3, fruit vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes, paprika) – 4.6, bananas – 3.9%, while increase – pears – 6.1, green vegetables – 3.5, citrus fruit – 3.7, apples – 0.8%. Bread and cereals went up in price by 0.7, meat and meat products – 0.2%. Fruit and vegetable juice went down in price by 5.8, chocolate – 3.2, eggs – 2.2, curd cheese – 1.6, coffee – 1.3, processed cheese and edible offal – 1.2 % each, while soft drinks went up in price by 2.5, tea – 2.3, sugar – 2.1, pasta – 2.1, rice – 1.8, smoked and salted fish – 1.3, smoked meat products – 1.2, oil – 1.2, curd – 1.1, bread – 0.8, pork – 0.8%.

 

As regards goods related to energy, a decrease in prices was observed for liquid fuel – 6.9, heat energy – 2.8, petrol – 2.3, diesel fuel – 1.6 %. Liquefied gas for cars went up in price by 5.4%.

 

Due to seasonal discounts, footwear went down in price by 3.6, clothing – 0.7%.

Among alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, the largest decrease in prices was observed for spirits – 2.6 %, while cigarettes went up in price by 2.1%.

 

As for other goods, a decrease in prices was observed for equipment for sport, camping and open-air recreation – 7.1, drawing and painting materials – 4.7, household cleaning and maintenance products – 4.2, cosmetics – 2.5, writing instruments – 2.4, bicycles – 1.9 %, while increase – non-electric kitchen utensils ­– 3.5, travel goods – 2.5, flowers – 1.6%.

 

As for services, services of passenger transport by air went down in price by 5.7, sanatoriums – 2.6, mobile phone connection – 1.5 %, while services of driving schools went up in price by 5.6, rest establishments – 3.4, hotels and package holidays – 1.4% each.

 

In August 2016, annual (August 2016 against August 2015) inflation stood at 0.8 %.

 

The annual inflation was mainly influenced by an increase in prices for catering services in restaurants, cafés and the like, tobacco products, vegetables, beer, maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment, as well as by a decrease in prices for fuels and lubricants, telephone services, electricity, heat energy.

 

Over the year, prices for consumer goods decreased by 0.2%, while those for services increased by 4%.

 

In August 2016, against August 2015, prices for consumer goods and services regulated by State and municipal authorities decreased by 1.8%, while market prices increased by 1.2%.
