Registered unemployment in Estonia remained in March 2016 at the previous month's level, with 32,638 people or 5.1% of the working-age population registered as out of work at the end of the month, informs LETA/BNS.

The rate of registered unemployment was as usual highest in East-Viru County at 12.4% and Valga County at 9.5%, and lowest in the Harju and Tartu counties at 3.5% and 3.7%, respectively. In most counties registered joblessness showed a downward trend in March, but a marked increase of half a percentage point was recorded in East-Viru County, the Unemployment Insurance Fund said.

"Looking at last month's figures, there are two things to take delight in: first, the number of vacancies on offer has grown, which gives many clients of us the opportunity to find work this spring, and secondly, people with reduced work ability have found us. Since the beginning of the year, the number of people with reduced work ability looking for work with our help has steadily grown and in March they already numbered more than 5,000," CEO Meelis Paavel said.

Skilled workers and craftsmen made up the biggest part of the registered jobless who had previously worked, both accounting for 20%, while manual workers accounted for 19% and service and sales personnel for 17%.

New job offers numbered 6,028 and the number of jobs available through the fund totaled 9,694 in March. During the month, 3,552 people found work or started business with the help of the Unemployment Insurance Fund.

Recipients of the unemployment insurance benefit numbered 11,850, making up 32% of the registered jobless. The average benefit per calendar month was 401 euros and the sum total disbursed was roughly 4 million euros. The basic unemployment allowance of 137 euros a month was paid to 8,637 persons, 23% of the total number of registered jobless.

The redundancy benefit was paid to 604 people and the average size of the benefit awarded in that month was 1,632 euros. The sum total paid out in redundancy benefits was more than 913,000 euros.

The benefit in case of insolvency of the employer was awarded to 100 persons. The average size of the benefit was 2,567 euros and overall more than 244,000 euros was disbursed under that item.
