Unemployed totaled 7.9% in Lithuania in the fourth quarter

Statistics Lithuania: the unemployment level reached 7.9% in Lithuania in the fourth quarter of 2008, which is by 2% points more in comparison with the third quarter of the corresponding year, and almost twice as high as in a respective quarter of 2007, ELTA informed.

Over the year 2008, the unemployment level experienced growth of 1.5% points in Lithuania (from 4.3% in 2007 to 5.8% in the past year).

 

The highest unemployment rate was recorded in 2001 (17.4%), and the lowest – in 2007 (4.3%).

 

In 2008, the female unemployment rate was lower than that among man – 5.6%, compared to 6% among man. The youth (age 15-24) unemployment rate in 2008 was 13.4%, and, just like in 2007, was twice as high as the total unemployment rate.

 

Statistics Lithuania estimates that the number of the unemployed in the fourth quarter of 2008 reached 130,000, which was by 33,000 more than in the previous quarter of 2008. Over the year, their number grew by 25,000, or 37% (from 69,000 in 2007 to 94,000 in 2008).
