In H1, the number of marriages in Latvia grew by 544 cases

Preliminary demographic indicators of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that during the first six months of 2015, 4 765 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 544 marriages or 13% more than during the first six months of 2014.

Over the last four years the number of registered marriages has increased from 10.8 thsd marriages in 2011 to 12.5 thsd marriages in 2014, annually.

 

In the first quarter of 2015 also birth rate kept growing – the number of live births increased by 155 as compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. However, in the second quarter as compared to the corresponding period of 2014 the number of newborns dropped by 302. During the first six months of 2015, 10 511 newborns were registered in the country, which is 147 children or 1.4% less than in the corresponding period of 2014.

 

During the first six months of 2015 the number of deaths witnessed an increase. 14 729 persons passed away during this period of time, which is 526 or 3.7% more than during the first six months of 2014.

 

With the number of births lagging behind the number of deaths, natural increase in Latvia since 1991 has been negative. During the first six months of 2015 the number of population in Latvia decreased by 4 218 people (during the first six months of 2014 – by 3 545 people).

The preliminary number of population in Latvia on 1 July 2015 accounted for 1 million 978.7 thousand people.
