Minister: children's health "catastrophic" in Latvia

BC, Riga, 16.07.2015.Print version
Children's health condition in Latvia is catastrophic, Health Minister Guntis Belevics (Greens/Farmers) said in an interview with the Latvian Television show "Rita panorama", reports LETA.

He explained that children are leading sedentary lifestyles, eating unhealthy foods, sitting in front of the computer for too long, and go to schools with poorly-ventilated classrooms.

The minister explained that many schools in Latvia have undergone simplified renovations, neglecting ventilation. Thus, windows must be opened during a recess, but the air in winter is cold. However, during the classes, the oxygen level in classrooms is so low that children get sick.

He admitted that it is not a good sign that children are fainting during the Song and Dance Festival's rehearsal. "It would be even worse if we learnt nothing from this situation," Belevics said.

The minister added that it is impossible to convince the Education and Science Ministry to change its attitude, for example, with regard to physical education. He believes that schools require a third physical education class, because if children are not engaged in physical activities until the age of 10, later on it becomes impossible.
