Baltic States depend more than average on EU support

A fresh KPMG survey shows that in the previous budget period, European Union (EU) structural funds were used most in Central and Eastern Europe by Estonia, followed by Latvia and Lithuania; this in turn means that the Estonian state budget is more dependent on EU subsidies than the average of European countries, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The effectiveness of the use of EU aloctions is shown by the difference between allocated and paid support, which for Estonia is 11% (Lithuania 12%, Latvia 19%).

Romania had the lowest efficiency (54% difference). In Estonia, by the end of 2014, 98% of EU allocated support was covered with contracts and 87% was paid.

"The Baltic countries have in recent years been the most efficient support users, and they were able to maintain this position. To sum up the period, it can be said that Estonia managed to utilise the EU support almost to maximum. However, the report also points out that the large investments made in Estonian infrastructure have led to the discussion of the impact their management and maintenance expense has on state and local government budgets. Also urbanization is still a problem in Estonia, although large sums have been channelled to rural development," said Chairman of the Board of KPMG BalticsAndris Jegers.

The Estonian state budget depends on payments of the euro support more than in European countries on average. In the budget period 2007-2013, EU support accounted for 17.4% of Estonia's GDP, while the Central and East European average was 15.5%.
