This publication presents the results of the Farm Structure Survey 2013 in Lithuania: number of farms of different categories, their grouping by size, land and its use, sown and planted areas by agricultural crop species, number of livestock and poultry, working family members, hired employees and duration of their employment, activities other than agricultural ones, etc.

According to the survey data, as of 1 June 2013, there were 171.8 thousand farms producing agricultural products in Lithuania. Farms owned 3 125.4 thousand ha of land, of which 2 861.2 thousand ha – utilised agricultural land. Over three years (since the 2010 Agricultural Census), the number of farms in Lithuania decreased by 14%, over the decade – by 37%. Meanwhile, over the decade, the land area owned by farms increased by 10%, agricultural land area – by 15%.

In 2013, the crop area of farms larger than 1 ha totalled 2 187.2 thousand ha, the number of farms growing crops totalled 159.6 thousand. Compared to 2010, the crop area increased by almost 10%, compared to 2003 – by 63%. Since 2003, the number of farms growing crops was on the decrease. In 2013, compared to 2010, the number of farms larger than 1 ha growing crops decreased by 12%, over the decade – by as much as 41%.

During the 2013 survey, detailed data on farms keeping different species of farm animals were collected. The number of farm animals was recorded as it was on 1 June 2013. In 2013, compared to the 2010 Agricultural Census data, the number of cattle on farms larger than 1 ha dropped by 3, pigs – 11, goats – 9, poultry – 2%. Meanwhile, the number of sheep increased by 71, rabbits – by 8, beehives – 7%.

Based on the 2013 survey data, there were 300.3 thousand farm workers on farms larger than 1 ha (52% – males, 48% – females). 94% of farm workers worked on farmers' and family farms, 6% – in agricultural companies and enterprises. The largest proportion (88%) of farm workers were farm holders and their family members, slightly more than 11% – permanently, 0.8% – temporarily hired workers. During the 2013 survey, 38% of farm holders and their family members indicated that, at the moment of the survey, apart from farm work, they had another paid work, of whom 91% stated that another paid work was the main one for them.
