Latvia records EU's second highest share of renewable energy in 2013

Latvia's share of renewable energy in final energy consumption amounted to 37.1% in 2013, the second highest in the European Union, reports LETA, according to the EU's statistical office Eurostat.

The highest shares of renewable energy in final energy consumption in 2013 were registered in Sweden – 52.1%, Latvia, as well as Finland – 36.8%, and Austria – 32.6%.

 

The lowest shares were recorded in Luxembourg – 3.6%, Malta – 3.8%, and the Netherlands – 4.5%.

 

Estonia's share amounted to 25.6%, the ninth highest, Lithuania's – 23%, the seventh highest.


The share of renewable energy in final energy consumption stood at 15% in the EU in 2014, compared to just 8.3% in 2004.

 

Compared to 2004, the share of renewable energy in final energy consumption grew in all member states except the Netherlands, where the situation has remained unchanged.

 

The share of renewables in gross final energy consumption is one of the headline indicators of the Europe 2020 strategy. The target to be reached by 2020 for the EU is a share of 20% renewable energy use in gross final energy consumption.
