An average, an Estonian household throws into trash 120 euros worth of food a year; in a household with children, as much as 200 euros worth of food is wasted.

Estonia is behind developed states in food waste.

Ministry of the Environment Waste Department Manage Peeter Eek said that an average household wastes 46.9 kilograms of food per year, or approximately 0.9 kg per week.

"The first general calculation reveals, when we multiply it with the number of population, then the amount of food waste is 70 thousand tons and the amount of wasted 20 thousand tons. This is an enormous amount of material," said Eek.

The study participants said they throw away fruit and then milk products most. Older people use food in a more economical way. However, young single people and young couples eat out a lot, and the little they buy for home, often goes to waste.
