Latvia's first satellite "Venta-1" could be launched into orbit with European carrier rocket "Vega"

Latvia's fist satellite "Venta-1" could be launched into orbit from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana with the European Space Agency's latest carrier rocket "Vega", University of Bremen lecturer and OHB Technology AG scientist Indulis Kalnins informed LETA.

On May 4, "Vega" will carry Estonia's first satellite "ESTCube-1" to orbit. "Venta-1" could be launched during the rocket's next run.

Previously, various options were sought to launch "Venta-1" with Indian, American or Russian carrier rockets. An agreement was reached on launching "Venta-1" with a Russian carrier rocket in the first months of 2013. However, due to various reasons, it was decided to use "Vega" to deliver "Venta-1" to orbit. The European Space Agency, however, has not given the go-ahead yet, but the matter is being actively solved.

As reported, "Venta-1" is designed for implementation of Automatic Identification System (AIS) and a system of satellites, developed by German space technologies company "OHB-System AG" in navigation. The University of Bremen, Ventspils University College and Ventspils High Technology Park also participate in the project.

The satellite's main cargo will be AIS receiver. This system will provide real-time data about navigation throughout the world.

The Swedish company Microtec AAT will have a separate module on "Venta-1" to test the "Plug-And-Play" technology, which was developed for the U.S. military needs.

The satellite's signals will be picked up by three stations – Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Center in Irbene, a backup station in Bremen, and a station in South Tyrol, Italy.
