Estonia's largest mobile communications company AS EMT announced that the data transfer output of its 4G network has surpassed its 2G network in 14 months after its launch, the Estonian national broadcasting corporation ERR reports.

For comparison, it took 2.5 years for the 3.5G network to surpass the 2G network in data transfer output, as LETA/ERR writes.

The highest data transfer output still takes place on the 3.5G network.

"It will be interesting to see when the 4G data transfer output outpaces the 3.5G network," said Ando Meentalo, the company's head of data and content.

The 4G, or fourth-generation cellular wireless standard, is a high-speed internet allowing for downloading speeds up to 100 megabits per second. Average speeds remain in the range of 20 to 60 megabits per second.

EMT was issued three licenses, and Tele2, Elisa, Elion were each issued one license. Those companies are responsible for establishing thousands of 4G substations in Estonia in the next five years.

As reported, EMT's turnover grew by 3% to 178 million euros in 2011 as compared to 2010.

The growth accelerated in the second half of the year, reaching six percent in the fourth quarter.

EMT's board chairman Valdo Kalm said that the turnover was increased by mobile Internet, roaming and fast growth of sales of smartphones and tablet computers.

EMT had 795,000 clients at the end of the year. The number of contract clients grew by 38,000.
