Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser who spoke at the informal meeting of the European Union ministers responsible for development in Tallinn on September 11th said that EU development cooperation must keep up with digital development, reports LETA/BNS.

Mikser at the meeting highlighted that digital progress is taking place everywhere in the world and that the EU should therefore devote more attention to the digital sphere in development cooperation policy. "We must engage in development cooperation that is future-oriented, and be aware of the added value that digital technologies and solutions can provide for the development of countries," the minister said.

The meeting started with a working lunch, where topics to be discussed included opportunities for engagement with more advanced developing countries, including middle income countries. Mikser said that a large part of the world's poorest people live in middle income countries, which is why they must be contributed to more than before. "We must contribute more towards cooperation with more advanced developing countries, which would meet their capabilities and needs," the foreign minister said. "There are many areas in which we have common interests, for example combating climate change or finding a solution to the migration crisis," Mikser said.

The ministers at the meeting also discussed resilience and connecting humanitarian aid and development cooperation. At the scheduled dinner, the ministers discussed the EU's External Investment Plan.

The meeting was led by high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy, Federica Mogherini.
