BC, Tallinn, 16.05.2017.Print version
The ransomware Wannacry which started spreading across the world at the end of last week has been spotted in Estonia, although fortunately it has not been able to do too much damage yet, Telia said LETA/BNS.

Reports concerning the ransomware started arriving on Friday.

Head of Telia Estonia's department of security incidents Aare Kirna said that some incidents have been recorded among Telia's customers which might be connected to the Wannacry virus trying to enter a computer user's systems. He added that one private and one business customer have been sent a warning concerning that but the customers have so far not asked the company for help. "So far we have been lucky in Estonia, but the Wannacry virus is still dangerous," Kirna stressed.

By now the virus has attacked more than 200,000 users and over 230,000 computers around the world. Ransomware demands are between 300 and 1,200 U.S. dollars and so far the criminals have been able to get more than 40,000 dollars in bitcoins.

The attacks affected many national and commercial systems, for instance the U.K.'s National Health Service (NHS), Spain's biggest telecommunication operator Telefonica and Russia's operator Megafon.
