Shortage of specialists to be biggest challenge for Latvia's IT sector this year

Shortage of specialists also this year will be the biggest challenge for Latvia's IT sector, said Signe Balina, the Latvian Information and Communication Technology Association (LIKTA) LETA.

She said that this year might be good for the sector, but the previous challenges remain present, including shortage of employees and specialists in the sector.


She said that, considering the limited laborforce resources, more and more Latvian residents should focus on those sectors that are competitive and have high wages. IT is one of these sectors.


In her words, the sector is now working on attracting specialists. The measures include computer studies program at schools, Developer Days at the University of Latvia to get pupils and students interested in the sector.


According to the Bank of Latvia data, in the first six months of 2016, turnover of software development services increased by 20.8% from the respective period in 2015. The information and communication technologies (ICT) sector has become the third largest exporter in Latvia, following timber and food products sectors.
