As the start-up environment is international, special visa regime for foreign experts is a very important issue for development of the start-up ecosystem in Latvia, Jekaterina Novicka, the board chairwoman of the Latvian Association of Start-ups said LETA.

Novicka said that the association is working on legislative amendments because, like it is in the world, Latvian legislation is not ready for such new business approach as start-ups.

"We are working on this special start-up legislation in cooperation with the Economics Ministry. The issue of visas is progressing slower, but it has been activated again when we received the Startup Wise Guys accelerator from Estonia," said Novicka. "Their program received more than 100 applications, and a considerable part of them were from the third countries – India, Belarus and others," she said.

"The accelerator faced a problem that teams cannot be simply brought to Latvia, therefore the visa issue is very important for development of the start-up ecosystem in Latvia," she said.
