Latvia has world's highest percentage of Internet users visiting piracy sites - study

Europe has the highest percentage of Internet users that visit content piracy sites, and Latvia tops the list of countries by the percentage of Internet users having visited a pirate site, according to Global Film & TV Piracy Market Insight Report 2016, released by MUSO content protection, data-analytics and piracy audience reconnection solutions provider, informs LETA.

Despite increasing availability of copyrighted content that can be legally downloaded from the Internet, piracy sites, which include streaming, torrenting, or file download, are visited hundreds of millions of times each day, especially in Europe, as the top ten countries with the highest percentage of piracy sites' users is comprised exclusively of European countries.


MUSO has based its analysis on data from the world's 14,000 largest piracy content sites. This year alone, the company has recorded 141 visits to these sites.


Latvia tops the list with 46.33% t of its Internet users having visited a pirate site. Bulgaria follows with 27.43%, Lithuania with 24.54%, Croatia with 22.7% and Spain with 22.19%.


Estonia does not appear in the list of 50 countries with the highest percentage of Internet users visiting piracy sites.
