Lithuania and Ukraine have signed an agreement on cooperation in the area of science and technology (S&T) in 2016-2020, writes LETA.

Education and Science Minister Audrone Pitreniene signed the agreement on behalf of the Lithuanian side. During Deputy Education and Science Minister Svetlana Kauzoniene's visit to Kyiv on 30 September - 1 October, Lithuania received the programme signed by Ukraine's Education and Science Minister Serhiy Kvit. The previous programme was in effect between 2011 and 2015.

"Lithuania's and Ukraine's S&T cooperation programme not only serves science but also helps foster close ties between the two countries. We are pleased to be able to create conditions for these ties to develop and grow stronger," Lithuania's Education and Science Minister Audrone Pitreniene said.

Based on the cooperation programme Lithuania and Ukraine fund bilateral mobility of scientists: cover visits of researchers, support science events and preparation of joint scientific publications.

A sitting of the joint Lithuania-Ukraine commission on cooperation in S&T was scheduled during the Lithuanian delegation's visit to Kyiv. The commission is responsible for selecting bilateral scientific research projects to be funded in 2016-2017. A total of 54 bilateral projects were submitted for its consideration. The best ones will be chosen by independent experts from both countries.

Cooperation with Ukraine in the area of S&T has been ongoing since 2002. A total of 91 bilateral research projects have been financed up to now. Lithuania allocated EUR 650 thousand for this reason.
