With support from coalition Riga City Council members today, former Riga Vice Mayor Andris Ameriks (Honor to Service), who has been gragged into a corruption scandal, survived a vote of no-confidence to stay on in the lucrative post of Freeport of Riga board chairman, reported LETA/BNS,

The motion was submitted by the Riga City Council's opposition, who emphasized that Ameriks' presence on the Freeport of Riga's board will damage the reputation of the port and is in contradiction with principle of good governance.

As reported, Ameriks earlier this week announced that he has decided to resign as vice mayor, but will still remain a city council member and continue to work on the board of the Freeport of Riga. He said that at the time when investigation was going on, his own reputation, as well as the reputation of the Riga City Council and GKR was under threat. He said that a time may come in life of any politician when reputation is the main issue.

Meanwhile, Environmental Protection and Regional Development Minister Kaspars Gerhards (National Alliance) submitted the bill on dissolving the Riga City Council to the government on Monday afternoon. The ministry said that it had found multiple violations on the part of the Riga City Council since 2017, and concluded that the violations were systemic.
