Latvia: Nemiro stripped of security clearance
Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) told reporters today that he had received information from the Constitutional Protection Bureau that the minister had been denied access to state secrets. Karins therefore called on KPV LV to nominate a new candidate for the economics minister's office.
Karins said that he did not know the reasons for revocation of Nemiro's security clearance, adding that this was very unexpected news.
KPV LV representative Atis Zakatistovs told reporters that this was unexpected news for him as well. Yesterday a state of emergency was announced in Latvia over the Covid-19 coronavirus, and the situation would be further exacerbated should the government fall, which is why KPV LV will decide on a candidate for the economics minister by Monday, March 16, he said.
"The prime minister has asked us to nominate our candidate, and we will respond on Monday," Zakatistovs added
