Central Election Commission announces snap elections in Riga on April 25
In accordance with the bill on the dissolution of Riga City Council, which President Egils Levits signed into law on Monday, the elections have to be held on the first Saturday after two months following the bill's promulgation. Since the bill came into effect on Tuesday, February 25, the elections have to take place on April 25.
The rules regulating the snap elections in Riga will be the same as in the 2017 local elections. On the day of elections, polling stations will open at 7 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. Three days before the elections, voters will be able to cast their votes early - from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, April 23, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 24.
Eligible to take part in the Riga elections are citizens of Latvia and other European Union (EU) member states who are at least 18 years old and have registered their residence in Riga at least 90 days prior to the elections, i.e., January 26, 2020. or who own a property in Riga. At polling stations, voters will be required to produce their valid passports or eID cards. Each voter will have to vote at their assigned polling station. Voters who find visiting their originally assigned polling stations inconvenient, will be able to change their polling stations between March 26 and April 11.
Voters who are unable to arrive at their polling stations due to health issues will be able to register for voting at home.
Political parties and electoral alliances will be able to register their lists of candidates with the Riga City Election Commission from March 20 to 26.
