Burovs and opposition lawmakers agree to convene three meeting of Riga City Council without quorum

BC, Riga, 05.02.2020.Print version
Riga Mayor Olegs Burovs (Honor To Serve Riga, GKR) and opposition lawmakers agreed to convene three meetings of the Riga City Council without a quorum, thus, causing legal grounds for dissolution of the Riga City Council, according to information obtained by LETA.

The first meeting was convened at 9:30 a.m. today, but was cancelled due to the lack of quorum as 22 out of 60 lawmakers were present. The next meeting is planned for 1 p.m. today.

LETA learned that none of the opposition and GKR lawmakers plans to attend this meeting.

On Thursday a meeting is scheduled to decide on dismissing Burovs. Most believably, it will be the third meeting without a quorum, allowing Burovs to keep the position of a "technical chairman".

Burovs said in a statement to the press that if the current Riga City Council is unable to adopt the city budget for this year, new elections should be held.

"Residents of Riga do not deserve lawmakers who refuse to work and act against interests of the residents. What our de iure partners, but de facto ex-partners from Harmony party are doing is nothing else than turning against interests of the residents and sabotage," said Burovs.

As reported, Harmony and For Riga block are attempting to oust Burovs, and promised to adopt the budget only when Burovs loses his position as the mayor.
