During the first meeting of the 12th Saeima yesterday, MPs elected Inara Murniece (All for Latvia!-For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK) as the new speaker of the Saeima, reports LETA.

Murniece served as the chairwoman of the Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee during the 11th Saeima.

Murniece, who holds two degrees, previously worked as a journalist at the ''Latvijas Avize'' newspaper before being elected to the 11th Saeima.

Unity leader Solvita Aboltina served as Saeima speaker during the 11th Saeima.

Inara Murniece spoke to reporters afterward, underlining that it is extremely important for Saeima to clearly explain to the populace the decisions it makes. One avenue how to bring this about, she said, is organizing conferences on crucial issues.

Murniece went as far as to say that it would be worth considering the formation of a "legislation analysis division", using other countries' experience as an example. This entity could evaluate laws adopted and how efficient they have been, she pointed out.

Murniece, a politician from the National Alliance VL-TB/LNNK, also commented today that the Saeima Speaker is not a "school principal who marks in her book when a deputy is out of line. This job is all about fellowship."
