Estonian ship builder Baltic Workboats to build 3 ferries for Kiel Canal for EUR 21 mln

Print versionEstonian ship builder Baltic Workboats has won a tender for supplying the Kiel Canal with ferries for 21 mln euros, according to local media reports LETA/BNS.

The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration chose the bid of the Estonian ship builder operating in Saaremaa, the local publication Kieler Nachrichten reports. The new ferries will have hybrid drives, which should decrease noise pollution and exhaust gas emissions.
Baltic Workboats won the procurement to build the first three ships out of the total of 14. The first vessel is intended to be put to use in 2020.
The new 30-meter ferries will replace the current vessels Nobiskrug, Audorf and Hochdonn, which were built in the 1950s and are nearing the end of their lifespan.
Over the medium term, the shipping administration intends to replace all 14 ro-ro ships sailing between Landwehr and Brunsbuttel.
