It is important to Latvia that Belarus is an independent, economically strong and stable country, Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) said during a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Prime Minister Syarhey Rumas.

Karins was in Minsk on a working visit on Thursday. His meeting with Lukashenko and Rumas dealt with various cooperation questions, including promoting cooperation in transport and logistics, environmental protection, as well as preparations for the Belarusian president's planned visit to Latvia.


The officials also discussed Belarus' cooperation with the European Union (EU) and NATO.


"Latvia and Belarus have good and diverse neighborly relations. It is important to us that Belarus is an independent, economically strong and stable country," Karins said while meeting with Belarus' top officials. 


In a separate meeting, the prime ministers of Latvia and Belarus, as well as the heads of the two countries' steering committees discussed preparations for the upcoming  2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, which will be jointly hosted by Riga and Minsk.


Karins together Belarussian colleagues visited the Great Stone Industrial Park to assess opportunities for deepening cooperation in the development of the Eurasian transport corridor and using the Latvian transit infrastructure for handling the Great Stone Industrial Park's cargo. 


On his visit to Belarus, Karins was accompanied by State Border Guard head General Guntis Pujats, the Latvian Hockey Federation's board chairman Aigars Kalvitis, as well as the federation's vice-president and secretary-general Viesturs Koziols and sports director Edgars Buncis
