Alert level for approaching storm in Kurzeme raised to red

The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center on Thursday raised the alert level for the approaching storm in Kurzeme from orange to red, the highest level, writes LETA/BNS. 


The red warning means that there is a high risk of significant damage in large areas as well as life-threatening accidents. Residents must in all circumstances follow information and instructions provided by the authorities and be prepared for emergency measures.


The latest Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center's forecast says that Thursday afternoon, starting off the coast, west-southwesterly winds will begin to intensify. On the west coast of Kurzeme, wind gusts will reach 25-27 meters per second in the afternoon, and further increase to 33-35 meters per second in the evening.


On the Vidzeme coast, wind gusts will reach 20-23 per second in the evening, and up to 25-30 meters per second at night.


Elsewhere in Latvia, wind gusts of up to 25 meters per second are expected in the evening and on the night to Friday.
