Ostapenko through to second round of Australian Open

Print versionLatvia's second-best ranked lady tennis player Alona Ostapenko on Tuesday opened this year's Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament with a win, informed LETA.
Ostapenko, who is currently ranked 45th in the WTA rankings, defeated Russia's Ludmila Samsonova (ranked 136th) 6-1, 6-4 in the tournament's opening round.
In the tournament's second round, Ostapenko will take on Switzerland's Belinda Bencic, who is currently ranked 7th in the world.
Ostapenko has earned 70 WTA ranking points for advancing to the second round of the Australian Open.
