A woman has died in Daugavpils who was possibly infected with rabies, a disease that has not been seen in Latvia since 2003, the Disease Prevention and Control Center's spokeswoman Ilze Araja told LETA.

The Disease Prevention and Control Center is currently taking preventive measures in response to information received from Daugavpils.

The Disease Prevention and Control Center and Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment BIOR have carried out initial tests, which indicate that the woman may have died of rabies.

The Disease Prevention and Control Center's officers continue work to identify all persons who have contacted the deceased woman and the risk of infection is assessed on a case-by-case basis. If necessary, rabies vaccination is prescribed.

Araja said that a total of 60 people would have to be vaccinated against rabies in Daugavpils.

The Disease Prevention and Control Center is currently awaiting the final results of laboratory tests. The center has notified The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control about the situation in Daugavpils.

According to the Disease Prevention and Control Center, the last two cases of animal rabies were recorded in Latvia in 2012. In turn, the last cases of human rabies in Latvia were registered in 1993, 1996 and 2003, when one case was diagnosed each year.
