In 2009, the Latvian airline airBaltic is planning to unveil three new routes – to the Lithuanian coastal resort town of Palanga, to the Swedish city of Linkoping and the northern Norwegian city of Tromso, the airline's president Bertold Flick said.

''We see that there is much demand on flights to Riga from these cities, because of transit possibilities to cities in the east. Palanga is an important city in Lithuania, and we can offer transit possibilities to people living in nearby Klaipeda,'' said LETA Flick.

He did admit, however, that the addition of only three new routes is quite small, but that this must be taken into account with the current economic situation. ''The economic crisis in Latvia will deepen, and we must take into account what is happening in the foreign market,'' said Flick. ''We must be very careful. This is not a year for risks,'' said Flick.

Speaking about unveiling flights to further destinations, Flick admitted that there is demand for flights to New York, but that 2009 is not the year to begin flights to further destinations. Costs to begin flights to New York would be around LVL 20 million per year. ''We will see how the market develops next year,'' said the president of the airline.
