LNG Carrier Independence built for the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipeda is sailing to Lithuania and has entered the Red Sea, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Klaipeda.

In early July 2014, Independence was near the Persian Gulf where it was possibly filled with natural gas. It should continue to the Suez Canal, the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and finally reach the Baltic Sea. In early May the vessel left the world's largest Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.

The ship has covered approximately 14,000 kilometres and another 10,000 remain to Lithuania. It was previously announced that when sailing to Klaipeda the ship which can carry 170,000 cubic metre load might bring gas needed for LNG terminal testing. The information on the exact amount on gas and where it may have been purchased is a commercial secret. However, it may possibly have been bought in Qatar or other Persian Gulf countries.

Klaipedos Nafta, a company carrying out LNG terminal construction, will purchase 170,000 cubic metres of gas for not more than LTL 112.4 million (EUR 32.5 million). That is the amount of gas needed to conclude testing for the terminal to become operational in early December. The vessel is expected to reach Klaipeda Seaport in late October.
