New car market in Lithuania dropped by 41% in December 2008

In December 2008, Lithuania"s new car market dropped by 41% to total 1,256 purchased cars. In December 2007, 2,129 cars were registered in the country.

According to preliminary data of AutoTyrimai, last month, the Volkswagen cars were leaders in the new car market of Lithuania (206 cars purchased); the second place was captured by Opel (164 cars) and the Subaru (126 cars) was third according to the number of sold cars of this make. Among the prestigious cars, Audi (30 cars purchased) retained the leader"s position, informs ELTA.

 

Last year, a total of 25,192 new cars were registered in Lithuania, a decrease of 2% year-on-year. A rapid increase in the market over the first six months of 2008 was replaced by even more rapid decrease in the second half-year. The analysis showed that a recession of 30-40% might be expected in the market in 2009, depending on circumstances.
