Judging from U.S. experts' statements following a visit to Latvia last week, the United States is overall pleased with Latvia's transport infrastructure, as the Transport Ministry informed the Nozare.lv business portal.

"Therefore now we will be waiting for the United States' further steps, but we must take into consideration that these steps will not necessarily be taken right now," emphasized the ministry. It also said the U.S. experts' visit to Latvia was highly important, as it proved the United States' interest to continue using Latvian transport infrastructure for transporting freights to and from Afghanistan.

During the visit to Latvia last week, a delegation of U.S. experts inspected Latvian transport infrastructure. Freight shipments to Afghanistan via Latvia began in February 2009, and so far at least 81,000 TEU containers were transported to Afghanistan through Latvia.

Earlier this month, Lithuanian media reported that NATO shipments for Afghanistan through Riga would be re-routed to Klaipeda, reported LETA.
