BC, Vilnius, 19.08.2013.Print version
In 2013 Lithuanian Railways (AB Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai) designated 1121 wagons for grain transportation. 400-500 wagons are expected to arrive from Belarus and Ukraine. It is estimated that 1400-1600 grain wagons will be sufficient to transport 2013 Lithuanian grain yield, reported LETA/ELTA.

According to Lithuanian Railways Freight Transportation Directorate Deputy Director for Development Saulius Stasiunas, Lithuanian Railways met with Lithuanian grain processing companies, exporters and other companies to discuss cooperation opportunities. Next, agreements to transport grain were signed, with most companies they are valid until 2014 July 1. In accordance with the agreements, all 1121 wagons for grain freight were rented out. As transportation volumes are expected to grow the Lithuanian company has approached Belarus and Ukraine railway companies to hire more wagons for grain haulage.

Grain yield in 2012 was 4.1 million tonnes, which was serviced by 1700 wagons. Lithuanian Railways expects that to transport about 3.8 million tonnes of grain - the Ministry of Agriculture estimates 8 percent lower grain yield in 2013.
